The Listening Post: Kristeen Young

“She frightens me,” I overheard the brunette in the front row quietly say between songs. To receive this kind of reaction is no mean feat, and when Kristeen Young took to the stage as the support act for Morrissey’s recent gigs in Dublin’s Vicar Street she definitely grabbed the attention, confusion, and fear, of the audience members. Thrashing out songs on her ceramically designed keyboard and wailing into the microphone with a look of both anger and determination on her face made her hard to ignore.

During her set you could hear mutterings of “PJ Harvey” and “Kate Bush”, and while the similarities are undeniable there’s also something very endearing and unique about Kristeen Young. Maybe it’s her catchy lyrics, maybe it’s her quirky fashion sense, maybe it’s her knack for hitting perfect notes when she sings. Whatever it is, it’s hard to put my finger on. But that’s one of the qualities of Kristeen Young, it’s difficult to adequately describe her music and on-stage presence, she seems like an anomaly that’ll be forever hard to grasp, and that’s perhaps one of the best things about her.

great review, I think the charts need more of this music, not that JLS crap (even though I kinda like them!)
thanx for the comment on my blog! x

To Be Honest I’m a Long Time Fan Of The Smiths & Morrissey.Hadn’t Seen Him Live Since 2002 {Long Story},But Having Heard “Kill The Father” off Kristeen Young’s album “The Orphans”,I Was Hooked,so I will be totally honest and reveal that I was looking forward to seeing her as much as Morrissey. She came on alone without her usual partner in crime Baby Jeff on drums, and single handedly tore Vicar Street asunder. The range of sounds coming from one person is staggering ! This is no ordinary talent. She absolutely annihilated, humiliated and totally disintegrated the venue. Those who remained in the bar more concerned with getting in another Pint of Guinness don’t know what they missed. For me personally, the icing on the cake was the sublime album track from the aforementioned “The Orphans” – “Life’s Not Short………It’s Soooooo Long”.Breathtaking ! For Me ,Kristeen’s set was not long was far too short.Hypnotic ,Mesmerising,And Beautiful.Simply Beautiful……….

She’s definitely very talented, and I think another good thing about her is the fact that she divides opinion – some people in the audience were really into it, others really really weren’t but it just didn’t seem to bother her. Thanks for the comment, Keith!

No, I’m sorry, I’m not agree. Kristeen Young got a very strong voice, maybe she plays the keyboard quite well, but her songs, expecially the last ones, are truly bad.

I enjoyed Kristeen too, she has an amazing vocal range and I really liked her quirky dress sense, her clothing was fantastic, as was her make up.She’s a visual and aural feast, she is an acquired taste but I very much enjoyed her voice.

I’m completely in agreement with everything you’ve said there, some people might not be big fans of her music but one thing they can’t deny is the fact that she’s definitely not boring on stage!

Also, was wondering if someone can link me to the Facebook page linking to this blog post? I can’t find it, and I’m curious! Haha

I’ve never heard of her….her outfit in that picture is very similar to a Lady GaGa creation though.

It is, you can never really tell what she’s going to wear. When I saw her live she was wearing some kind of skirt/shirt combo that looked like a dress that had something about grits written on it. Thanks for the comment, and your new blog is looking very cool! x
